PRIMAL
GROUNDS REVIEW.....
8 out of 10!
Quotes
from John Gilchrist! "Primal
Grounds is a 'funky' natural bakery cafe
& coffee house" who knows how to
slice a dessert! They
have fresh, organic, clean light &
natural tasting foods from hot soups, wraps
to jambalaya! With
fairly elaborate sandwiches and especially
the 'Roast Turkey & Cranberry' sandwich
for only $6.50 is a three-hander, for two
hands is just not enough! To deal with the
scope of this sandwich....it's just huge!
You get a salad within a sandwich! Now
for the desserts....they are roughly the
size of a brick! From brownies to rice
pudding for $3.50 that's a bargain! Primal
Grounds offers clean, light, natural foods
not over the top! They
will keep selling their 'happiness' along
with some pretty good food! Be
sure to check out their second location at
Westside Recreation Centre at 144- 2000 -
69th Street SW just south of 17th Avenue SW
where they have 'gluten-free' pizza! Again,
I think they deserve an 8 out of
10! Primal
Grounds is featured in John Gilchrist's
newest book........
"Best Eats in Calgary".

IMPACT
EATS
I
have probably passed by Primal Grounds
hundred of times driving on 37th
Street. On the other hand, Judy who either
loves something or hates it, actually took
the time to drop in and try it. Luckily for
Margaret and her staff at Primal Grounds,
Judy loved it. That’s why Elaine, who was
preoccupied with her upcoming Palm Springs
retreat, Judy and myself decided to take
time out and have lunch there.
Driving
up to Primal Grounds, its plain green
façade was none too inspiring, but when I
say the drive-through, my heart skipped a
beat – instant bonus points! Walking
through the door was a trip into "funky
space." The snug diner’s mustard
yellow walls were bordered with jazzy
"primitive people" that add life
to the interior. I was also immediately
impressed by the genuine warmth Margaret
shows her customers. I felt as if we were at
a friend’s house for lunch.
As
for the food, everything is made from
scratch. A few entrees that were showcased
this day were mulligatawny soup, vegetarian
lasagna, turkey burritos and the dish that
started Margaret on the road to success, The
Famous Turkey Sandwich on Homemade Molasses
Bread. I chose the mulligatawny soup ($3.00)
and a generous side salad ($1.50). Elaine
wanted something substantial, and ended up
ordering the turkey burritos. Judy was all
but salivating for the Famous Sandwich, sans
cranberry sauce and sprouts. It’s worth
noting that the Famous sandwich is the
steepest item on the menu at $4.95.
The
atmosphere at Primal Grounds was deliciously
casual. Either order at the counter or one
of the pleasant servers will make their way
over to you. My soup/salad and Elaine’s
burritos arrived at our table as we were
returning to our seats, while Judy’s
sandwich, being famous and all, was
fashionably late and surprisingly large.
Elaine was pleased with her selection, and
my soup, although it could have been hotter,
was abundantly flavourful. A great chunk of
Primal Grounds signature molasses bread was
very much appreciated. The small carafe of
house dressing was another reminder of
Primal Grounds’ "home appeal."
Since
dinner was still hours away, we were all in
favour of trying one of the desserts that
were seducing everyone who looked their way.
Elaine went for size, opting for the mammoth
chocolate brownie, while Judy couldn’t
resist the carrot cake. My traditional
nature brought me to the butter tart square,
which was nice and gooey. The carrot cake
was exceptional and the brownie scored a 10
for appearance, but came up a little dry in
texture and flavour. All desserts were
$2.95.
As
the name would suggest, Primal Grounds also
offers a myriad of hot caffeinated and decaf
beverages. Did we enjoy ourselves? You bet.
Margaret has a bustling eatery that only a
person with her genuine love for the
business could truly appreciate.
